Businesses I've Busted for Poor Recycling Habits (And How You Can Do The Same):
In Montgomery County, Maryland, call Alan Pultyniewicz at (240) 777-6480
- Ba Le 842 Rockville Pike #A : according to Mr. Pultyniewicz (email of 9/9/03), they are recycling now.
- Kensington Pizza and Kabob : according to Mr. Pultyniewicz (email of 9/9/03), they were not receptive to MoCo's first visit and will return to see if recycling has been put into place. Otherwise they will face a fine. Current status is unknown.
In DC, first call the DC office of recycling at (202) 645-7191 with the address and name of business, receive a confirmation number, wait a week and call (202) 727-1000. Or submit your request online if you'd like to track the case without having to call the office.
- International Cafe 2633 Connecticut Ave, Ward 3 : current status is unknown.
- Palisades Pizza and Clam Bar 4885 MacArthur Blvd, Ward 3 : current status is unknown.
- Soul Vegetarian Restaurant & Exodus Carry-Out 2606 Georgia Ave. NW, Ward 1 : current status is unknown.
- Soho Tea & Coffee 2150 P Street NW : called on 6/29/05 (confirmation #965133) They are now recycling (8/1/05).
- Bagels Etc. 2122 P Street NW : called on 6/29/05 (confirmation #965134, on 7/7 they were given instructions on how to remedy their situation and need to comply within 14 days)
Four Wings Recycling Program, Bangkok, Thailand : Without any assistance from the Embassy, I convinced our apartment complex to begin a simple recycling program. In Thailand and other third world countries, unlike the US, people will go through trash at 3 am on the streets looking for items they can sell to recyclers. Because of this, it's important to concede that not every item thrown into the trash ends up in a landfill. However, a formal recycling program can recycle a larger percentage of recyclable material, will show residents that the recycling process is encouraged, and will spare others from having to sift through trash, a most unpleasant way to get income. In the end, Four Wings purchased bins for each floor of our building (and another that they own) with a very simple (and in my opinion, vague) sign telling people that recycling should go in there. I would have liked to take it another step and work with the management to put up a more useful sign, but I ran out of time and energy.

Other:
- I know die-hards would say you should not wear clothes that require dry cleaning, but for us, it's unavoidable, so at least we use a cleaner in DC that uses something less harsh.
