A few thoughts on this ridiculous scheme in Congress to deal w/ rising gas prices 1. Gas prices are not high. That’s right; they are, in fact, the lowest in the industrialized world. 2. But yes, sticker prices are still going up. We Americans are use to these artificially low prices (not as crazy as the Venezuelans who can fill up for $2) so if you want to change things (which I’m not sure anyone in Congress really want to do), take away the insane incentives/give-aways/welfare (Zinn would call it welfare) that Big Oil gets in the energy bill. I thought Republicans were all about free market capitalism and the invisible hand. Let renewables compete on the same level as fossils and then let’s see which is more cost-effective. 3. This $100 rebate is silly and everyone knows it. How on earth would the government figure out who drives and who doesn't? Help consumers get more money back in their pocket by taxing new cars inversely proportional to their MPG. Cars over 60 MPG have no tax. 45-60 get slapped with an additional $5000, 35-45, $7000, 25-35, 10,000, 20-25, $15000, 15-20, $20000, lower than 15, $25000. Better yet, do it based on percentiles, so that from year to year the categories don’t need to be modified. Take the money from that tax and earmark it for public transportation.
